Worst Things for Your Back
Dear Friend,
On a few of my previous trips to China I experienced
a bit of lower back pain that was not improved through
the back bridge - as taught in my international best-
seller, Combat Conditioning.
Now, for many, lower back pain is quickly eliminated
with bridging (the very thing, incidentally, that many
will advise you NOT to do - no small wonder when
they get paid for what they advise, huh - yet there
are plenty of health care pros who advocate the
bridge as I teach it).
In many cases, people who have had back pain for a
decade or more, have eliminated the pain in a week or
two just by doing the bridge.
So what was the problem in my previous visits to
China.
At first I thought it was my eating of too many hot
peppers. And I'm still certain that eating them is
a factor - so I'm doing my best to be careful on
that one during my current stay - and, fingers
crossed - so far, so good.
The second thing I wondered was, "Am I overdoing
some of the exercises that I'm learning while here?"
That was a possiblity - so I had to give myself the
same advice I give others: When doing anything that
is NEW to you, start slowly. Never assume that because
you're Joe or Jane Superstar that you can begin running
with a marathon. You may finish the race, but you'll pay
a heavy price for the ignornace.
On to guess numero tres. How was my posture when
sitting in chairs, walking, sitting in bed, etc.?
I was quick to note that while working from a laptop in
bed, sometimes I'd get lazy with my posture - and yes,
this could have been a contributing factor.
Number four: Was my spine out of alignment?
Tis a good question. If you're spine is out of whack, it can
cause a lot of problems. But here in China, the really good
accupuncturists and body workers are experts in realigning
the spine - as well as every other joint in your body. I've
seen adjustments here that are not taught anywhere else,
and they are amazing to say the least.
The other day Zhannie and I went in for a session. I had
the girl who normally works on me give her a three-hour
session. And let me tell you, it was snap, crackle and pop.
Afterward Zhannie felt like a trillion bucks.
So, based on the above, I doubt that my spine was out of
alignment.
So what else could it be?
This lead me to potential culprit number 5 - my bed.
Ahhhh-haaa. Yes, that was it. My bed was hard as a rock.
And every time I came to our vacation home on Hainan
Island, THAT is when the back pain began.
It didn't happen when I was staying in hotels in Beijing or
Shanghai. And it went away when we visited other citiies
wherein I slept on a five-star bed.
Yes, the problem was the bed.
I had my brother-in-law locate a memory foam mattress for me.
We found a company in Guangzhou that makes them and
had it delivered BEFORE I arrived here.
And let me tell you, I'm in heaven. This mattress is making
all the difference in the world.
It's the type of mattress I sleep on back in the U.S., and it
works wonders for me.
I cannot say that it will work for you or not - but one thing is
certain, because you spend nearly one-third of your life in bed
- and some spend even more than that - you really do owe it to
yourself to spend the bucks to get a good mattress.
It'll not only help you get a good night's sleep - but if you have
back pain that persists despite visits to a chiropractor, osteopath
or other health professional - and if you the pain continues even
after doing the pain eliminating exercises I teach in Combat Conditioning -
then take the time to find the bed that is right for you.
Like myself, you may find out that your bed is the culprit.
Well, my friend, that's all for now.
Kick butt - take names,

Matt Furey
