How Amy Stays Fit in the Snow
Dear Friend,
Being I live in sunny Florida where "we don't get
no snow" - (tis how the hicks here say it).
But, I'll never forget my younger years back in
Iowa, where I trained in snow regularly via running
sprints through big drifts - or by shoveling snow. Twas
one of my favorite activities as a boy .. and the pay was
good.
Well, in looking through the mountain of emails today I
found the following that brought my Iowa memories back
to life once again. Take a read:
Dear Matt-
I have a long ways to go to in my fitness regimen but let me
tell you about my week. We got 24" of snow in 24 hours.
Not much for Denver, maybe but a heck of a lot for southwestern
Ohio. Well, I did a LOT of shoveling over the next few days, dreading
the sore legs and back I knew would follow. Only I never got sore.
Why? Because I've been doing Hindu squats (and doing my best at the
other parts of the Royal Court).
Wow! I was able to lift the snow using my legs instead of my back,
which prevented strain there, and my legs just thought it was another
workout (albeit a long one)! Thank you for getting me through the
"Storm of '04!"

M.F.: Hi Amy. Thanks for the kind words. You've dredged up memories
for me and I thank you for that, as they're good. When I was a high
school rassler I used to shovel my neighbor's sidewalks and driveway.
At the time some people were getting snow blowers, but I'd have no
part of that. For one, it ruined a perfect workout - and for two, I
didn't
think I could charge as much if the machine did all the work. Was pro-
bably wrong there - but the key thing is it gave me a fantastic workout
that was immensely fun. The great thing about shoveling snow is that
you not only work all the major muscle groups, but you get to train
outdoors and breath mega-fresh air. I believe it's a great cardio
workout
as well as a superior muscular endurance workout. And ... if you had
24 inches to haul away, you're getting strength, too.
I'll never forget the time we had a blizzard - I think it was 1975. I
was
a paper boy at the time for the Omaha World Herald. My papers came a
day late due to the blizzard - and so I had to deliver a Sunday and a
Monday paper on the same day.
The drifts were unreal, too. Not embellishing in the least when I say I
was
level with some roofs when I walked to the front door, pried it open
from
the top and slid the paper to the floor. Amazing indeed. I enjoyed it
while
I lived there - yet, I can honestly ... I don't miss it. All the best
to you.
Well, my friend, tis all for now.
Kick butt - take names!
